Another
question I have seen being asked a lot is regarding hard disks
with capacities in excess of 137Gb. Basically to use a
hard disk with a capacity greater than 137Gb you need to have
Service Pack 1 installed for Windows XP and Service Pack 2
installed for Windows 2000.
Once you have
installed the latest service pack, Windows will detect the size
of your hard disk correctly. The problem occurs however if
you are installing Windows XP on a computer with a hard disk
bigger than 137Gb. If you have an old Windows XP install
CD, which doesn't have Service Pack 1 on it, then the Windows
Setup will only detect your hard disk as being 137Gb. If
this happens, there are two things you can do.
You can either
install windows anyway, then install Service Pack 1 to enable
Windows to detect the rest of your hard disk space, and then
finally partition and format the rest of your hard disk.
This will make your computer look as if you have two hard disks
in it. For example, with a computer with a 250Gb hard disk
and one CD-Rom drive, you will have a Drive C in "My computer"
with a 137Gb capacity and a Drive D as your CD-Rom drive and a
Drive D with a 113Gb capacity which is the space left over from
your 137Gb drive C (250Gb - 137Gb). If you decide to use
this method, once you've installed Service Pack 1 you need to
partition and format your hard disk. You can do this
easily by doing the following;
1. Click
"Start", then "Control Panel". (Or you might have to click
"Start", then "Settings", then "Control Panel".
2. Double click "Administrative tools".
3. Double click "Computer management".
4. Click "Disk Management".
5. You can then follow the steps in the wizard to configure the
rest of the space on your hard disk drive.
If however, you
would rather have a 250Gb Drive C for example as opposed to two
drives, then you need to make a slipstreamed Windows XP CD.
This uses a CD-Writer to make a new Windows XP CD with Service
Pack 1 on it. I have made one myself and it worked well.
It is a little more difficult than the previous method but can
be done by following the instructions on
here.
